ABOUT
Built in 1915 in the heart of historic Frenchtown, St. Charles, the McKinley School has been part of the neighborhood for more than a century.
For generations, its halls were filled with students as a neighborhood elementary school. Later, the building began a new chapter as an antique mall, when the entrances to the former classrooms were transformed with charming storefront facades, creating the feeling of strolling down a little street lined with shops.
When we began reimagining McKinley as a home for arts, events, and celebrations, we knew those facades had to stay. They’re a little unexpected, a little whimsical, and part of what makes this building unlike anywhere else.
Today, the McKinley School brings another chapter to this historic building, one centered around creativity, gathering, and community. From weddings and celebrations to pottery, painting, art shows, and creative events, we’re excited to see these old school halls filled with people and memories once again.
The building has changed a lot since 1915, but it has always been a place where people come together.

Meet Our Artists
Mother and daughter duo, Mary and Kari Ostertag are the founders of McKinley School, combining their artistic abilities to create an amazing experience.
Kari Ostertag
Artist & Instructor
Kari is a graduate from Lindenwood University, with a BFA in Studio Art, focusing on painting and ceramics while in college. Her enthusiasm for art began at a very young age, and she has a passion for inspiring others and getting people involved with the arts. With her friendly and infectious personality she gets everyone comfortable with a paintbrush or clay in hand.
Mary Ostertag
Co-Artist
Mary is a lifetime self taught artist and has received numerous awards throughout her career. In 1997, she decided to work specifically in Fine Art. She is a prolific artist, as she challenges herself daily, combining a lifetime of skill, imagination, and experimentation to draw the viewer in. She loves people and inspiring others to create.
